Which VPAT do you need?

Today, where technology shapes nearly every aspect of our lives, ensuring that digital products and services are accessible to all users is vital. And when we talk about businesses wanting to sell their products to the federal government, adherence to accessibility standards is mandated. Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) and Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) stand as indispensable tools for businesses aiming to sell their goods and services to the federal government. VPAT types are tailored to different regulatory frameworks, providing comprehensive assessments of accessibility compliance for diverse markets and jurisdictions.

Know in detail: All about VPAT and ACR

What is a VPAT?

Voluntary Product Accessibility Template or VPAT is a document that indicates a product’s conformance with the Section 508 accessibility standards. Originally developed to comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, VPATs have evolved to encompass other international accessibility guidelines like Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and EN 301 549. VPAT consists of Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) where companies can report their product or service’s accessibility conformance.

The latest release is version 2.5 and there are 4 types of VPATs.

Types of VPATs

Section 508 VPAT

  1. It assesses products against Section 508 standards.
  2. This VPAT is used by companies that wish to contract with the U.S. Federal government.

WCAG VPAT

  1. The VPAT is designed to report conformance with WCAG.
  2. It is used by companies aiming for accessibility compliance beyond governmental regulations.

 EN 301 549 VPAT

  1. The VPAT document is customized to assess products against accessibility standards outlined in the European Directive.
  2. It is used by companies that wish to sell their products in the European Union.

INT VPAT

  1. This VPAT incorporates all the three types mentioned above i.e. Section 508 VPAT, WCAG VPAT and EN 301 549 VPAT.
  2. INT VPAT is used by companies that wish to sell their products in various countries.

Choosing the Right VPAT

Selecting the right type of VPAT depends on factors like your target market, legal obligations, and organizational values. For instance, if your product targets the U.S. government sector, a Section 508 VPAT is essential. Conversely, if you’re eyeing international markets, an INT VPAT covering multiple standards may be prudent.

The VPAT template can be downloaded from the ITIC website.
