What's new in VPAT 2.5?

Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is the widely used template for reporting accessibility of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products and services. VPAT consists of Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) where companies can report their product or service’s accessibility conformance.

Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC), United States maintains VPAT template and ensures that as accessibility guidelines and standards across the globe are changing, the same is reflected in the VPAT template. VPAT includes global accessibility guidelines and standards, such as:

In October 2023, WCAG 2.2 was published and ITI’s included the same in VPAT 2.5 template. A point to remember different versions of WCAG are included in different VPAT editions. The 508 edition includes WCAG 2.0, EU edition includes WCAG 2.1, WCAG and International (INT) editions include all the 3 versions of WCAG – 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2. Based on the WCAG version a product or service is confirming to a suitable VPAT edition should be used for reporting.

So, let’s now find out what are some of the key changes in VPAT 2.5 template.

Key changes in VPAT 2.5

  • WCAG 2.2 Guidelines included in WCAG and INT editions.
    • 9 new success criteria for WCAG 2.2 added in respective tables of WCAG edition.
  •  For 4.1.1 Parsing Level A, a note is included stating this criterion is obsolete and removed – Does not apply for WCAG 2.2 and automatically “Supports” for version 2.0 and 2.1. This change is included in all the 4 editions.
  • In the EU edition, updated Table 3 for WCAG Level AAA to include the missing criteria’s 3.1.5, 3.1.6, 3.2.5, 3.3.5, 3.3.6.
  • In all editions, the revision in header is updated to 2.5 thus reflecting the same revision number across all the editions.
  • Made the definition language consistent for the term “Not Evaluated,” second sentence.
  • In the EU edition, minor typos were fixed in the Instruction section.
